Boa doesn’t stay tight and they’re not warm below freezing.

Getting ahead of winter!

Getting these boots for winter biking aims to get ahead of the inevitable winter season.
I am a hiking boot fan. Norwegian welted leather boots, mink oil, and Vibram soles especially! I have worn these types of boots for so long I can't imagine life without. They are all-season boots. The thermal performance with socks is excellent for activities, however they don't idle well.
With this background in mind, the decision to acquire the MXZ304 was relatively easy. The Vibram soles caught my attention because no boot with a Vibram sole ever disappointed. The next details including 3M thinsulate also fit with the active work gloves that are amazing in cold weather. Again not ideal for sitting around in the cold, but when active, they are perfect. The same is true with Thinsulate boots.
The construction and materials fit with the environment and are topnotch.
Fit is excellent with help from the team at Lake. Upon receiving the boots, I tried them immediately. Based on the usual fit from hiking boots, the MKZ304 are noticeably warmer than the hiking boots with similar materials and features. I expect that the combination of biking sock and wool sock will prove to be reliably warm in extreme temperatures while biking. It almost makes one look forward to winter! Not!
The countermeasures for climate ingress into the boot are impressive to see in real life.
I am looking forward to updating when winter arrives.

Winter is coming!

I bought these since over the last 5 or so years, circulation has been an increasing issue where any sort of cold riding below 5°C caused me numb toes. I've used many shoulder season boots over the years and no matter the sock combination, the issue persisted. I live on the Pacific Coast where winter temps are usually between -5°C and 5°C and lots of moisture. Any concerns I had regarding water ingress have so far been alleviated. 3 rides in, 1 damp, 1 soaker and one in a couple inches of snow, have proven warm and dry. Do not over sock. My best success with these have been thinner wool socks.
Fit wise, I'm normally a skinny shoe kind of guy, bit this time I went with the wides based on the fitting suggestions on the website and some great suggestions from a few emails with Lake. Customer service has been fantastic. I ordered these directly through lakecycling.ca. They assured me they would take care of any fit issues that I may have. They even sent me a new pair of insoles since my right shoe insole came with a few flat spots being quite lumpy.
The price made me a little hesitant, but the customer experience and performance of the boots have convinced me this was a great purchase. Can you really put a price on not having to ride your trainer in the garage?
